It links the North Cape in Norway with the Portuguese Algarve, covering a distance of over 10,000 kilometres, and thousands of cycle tourists use it every year to explore some of the continent’s most spectacular coastal landscapes.

However, those who visit the Huelva coast soon discover a reality that is not always reflected in the guidebooks: the official route currently has several sections where it is not possible to pass, either by bike or on foot.

Far from being an insurmountable problem, this situation presents an opportunity to discover some of the most valuable natural areas in south-western Europe. At Cycling Center Playas de Luz, we have designed and tested several routes that allow you to navigate these gaps safely whilst enjoying some of Andalusia’s finest cycling landscapes.

The main challenge facing EuroVelo 1 in Huelva

The section between Ayamonte and Huelva presents the greatest challenges of the official route.

Many travellers end up taking the N-431 to make their way to the capital of Huelva. Although this may seem like a simple solution, it is a road with heavy traffic, which is not particularly suitable for long-distance cycle touring.

The alternative we propose makes use of disused railway lines, tarmac-surfaced farm tracks, cycle paths, forest roads and secondary roads with low traffic volumes.

The result is a much safer and more enjoyable experience that allows you to discover some of southern Europe’s most important natural areas.

Route 1: EuroVelo 1 Alternative: Ayamonte – Huelva

This proposal connects Ayamonte with Huelva, avoiding the problematic sections of the official route in the most direct way possible.

The route takes you through the Isla Cristina Marshes, the El Prado Lagoon and the area surrounding the Marismas del Odiel Biosphere Reserve.

As well as being a popular cycle route, it is one of the best birdwatching routes in Andalusia, linking the Portuguese protected areas of Ría Formosa and Sapal de Castro Marim with the wetlands of Huelva.

Route 2: Ayamonte–Huelva Coastal Alternative Route

For those who prefer cycling by the sea, we’ve put together a second option, which is the one we recommend.

Although it is a little longer, this route allows you to enjoy kilometres of Atlantic coastline, coastal pine forests and cycle paths that run alongside some of the province’s most attractive beaches.

The shade of the pine forests, the views of the ocean and the constant proximity to natural areas make this route one of the most appealing options for cycle tourism and bikepacking.

Both alternatives address the same problematic sections of the official route between Ayamonte and Huelva, but offer different experiences. There are sections where it is not feasible to pass through, so it is advisable to use verified alternatives such as those we suggest.

How difficult are these routes?
These routes are very accessible for cycle tourists with moderate experience. Most of them follow quiet paths and roads with little traffic.

Can you do them on a gravel or trekking bike?
Yes, these are the ones we’d recommend most. You can also do them on a mountain bike or an e-bike.

Is it necessary to take the tides into account when planning the connection to EuroVelo 8?
Yes. The section along Doñana beach is only accessible at low tide, so it is essential to check the tide tables.

Are there facilities and support points along the routes?
Yes, particularly in areas close to urban centres and around Playas de Luz, where you’ll find facilities specifically for cycle tourists.

Can the routes be completed in several stages?
Of course. They’re ideal for both day trips and multi-day trips, whether you’re staying in accommodation or travelling in a motorhome.

When is the best time to explore these routes?
Spring and autumn offer the best weather conditions. Winter is also a good option, as the climate in the area is mild.

Is it possible to make them in the summer?
Yes, the Atlantic coast is the coolest part of Andalusia in summer.
