That's why we want to share one of our favourite routes through the Algarve, based on our own experience touring this wonderful region from East to West. How many days do you need to tour the Algarve by motorhome?

The ideal duration depends on your preferred pace of travel:

Algarve route by motorhome in 3 days

Ideal for getaways from Andalusia. We recommend concentrating on Tavira, Faro, Lagos and Cabo de San Vicente.

Algarve route by motorhome in 5 days

It allows you to add charming villages such as Cacela Velha, Fuseta, Alvor and Silves.

Algarve motorhome route in 7 days

The option we recommend from Camper Park Playas de Luz. It allows you to discover both the coast and the interior of the Algarve without rushing and enjoying every stop.

The 5 must-sees of the Algarve if you're short on time

From Camper Park Playas de Luz you can reach the Algarve in less than 10 minutes. If you only have a long weekend or a few days to explore the Algarve by campervan, these are the places we would never miss on our route:

1. Cacela Velha

Possibly the most beautiful village in the Algarve. Its whitewashed streets, its viewpoints over the Ria Formosa and the peaceful atmosphere that permeates every corner make it seem as if it has been frozen in time.

2. Tavira

One of the most charming cities in Portugal. Strolling along the Gilão river, exploring its historic centre and enjoying the local gastronomy are experiences that we always recommend.

Vilamoura and Praia da Falésia

The perfect combination of leisure, beach and scenery. Vilamoura's spectacular marina and the stunning red cliffs of Praia da Falésia alone justify a stop.

4. Lakes

For many travellers, Lagos represents the essence of the Algarve. Its beaches, sea caves and especially Ponta da Piedade offer some of the most spectacular images in Portugal.

5. Cape St. Vincent

The westernmost tip of the Algarve and one of those places that leave a lasting impression. The sunsets over the Atlantic are simply unforgettable.

Are you preparing your route through Portugal? Book your pitch at Camper Park Playas de Luz and start your trip to the Algarve from a privileged location next to the Portuguese border.

The best way to get to the Algarve from Huelva is to use the motorway from Seville, which crosses the Guadiana International Bridge at Ayamonte to enter Portugal. Just before the border, you can make a stop at Camper Park Playas de Luz to get to know this corner of the Costa de la Luz before continuing your route in the Algarve and ask us about our recommendations in the Algarve that we usually give to motorhomers.

First stop: Vila Real de Santo António, the gateway to the Algarve

If you are arriving from Huelva, one of the most attractive ways to start the trip is to cross the Guadiana by ferry from Ayamonte to Vila Real de Santo António, based at Camper Park Playas de Luz.

This elegant Portuguese town retains a pleasant shopping atmosphere and is the perfect place to take your first walks in the Algarve. Its straight streets, lively squares and shops make this town an excellent introduction to Portugal.

Our recommendation for food

When visiting Vila Real we usually stop at Tasquinha da Muralha, a restaurant where you can enjoy traditional Portuguese cuisine and fresh fish.

📍 Camper Park Playas de Luz

In Isla Cristina, but you can get there by bike along the Vía Verde Litoral, or by motorbike on the road, and take the ferry in Ayamonte. It's a very pleasant ride and quite an experience!

The most authentic Algarve by the Guadiana River

Before setting off along the coast, it is worth discovering one of the most peaceful and unknown areas of the Algarve: the Guadiana Valley.

Alcoutim, calm and nature by the Guadiana River

Located opposite Sanlúcar de Guadiana, Alcoutim is one of those places that invites you to stop and relax. Its privileged location by the river offers spectacular views and a relaxed atmosphere that is hard to find in other more touristy spots in the Algarve.

It also has a magnificent river beach equipped with services, ideal for cooling off during the warmer months.

Cacela Velha, a jewel on the Atlantic Ocean

If we had to choose one of the most beautiful villages in the Algarve, Cacela Velha would definitely be at the top of the list.

Its perfectly preserved streets, the viewpoints over the Ria Formosa and the tranquillity make every visit special. From here it is also possible to access the beach by small local boats, a highly recommended experience to complete the visit.

⚠️ Important: Overnight stays in the car park are not allowed.

Tavira: one of the Algarve's most charming towns

If there is one town that we always recommend to those who travel the Algarve by motorhome, it is Tavira.

We love strolling along the Gilão River at sunset, crossing its historic bridges and spending time observing the daily life of a city that retains all the Portuguese essence. A visit to the municipal market and a freshly squeezed orange juice are almost obligatory before continuing the route.

Nearby is Praia do Barril, which can be reached by a small tourist train or by walking along a pleasant footbridge. This beach also preserves the remains of an old tuna trap, testimony to the area's fishing tradition.

Our recommendation for food

We particularly like Ponto de Encontro, an excellent option to enjoy traditional Portuguese cuisine in the heart of the historic centre.

Santa Luzia: the octopus capital of Portugal

A few kilometres from Tavira is Santa Luzia, one of our favourite villages in the eastern Algarve.

Its fishing tradition is still very present and it is one of the best places to taste octopus in Portugal.

Where to eat

  • Zurrata Restaurant
  • Tasquinha do Bruno

Two restaurants that we frequently recommend to those who ask us where to eat well in this area.

Fuseta: the essence of the sea in the Ria Formosa

Fuseta has kept intact the traditional fishing character of the Algarve.

Its promenade, local atmosphere and proximity to the Ria Formosa make it a very pleasant stop along the route. It is one of those places where you can still enjoy the most authentic Algarve.

Our recommendation for food

We love Casa Corvo, especially for the quality of its fish and its local atmosphere.

📍 Camping Fuseta

An excellent option to spend the night and explore the town on foot or by bicycle.

Faro and the heart of the Algarve

The Algarve's capital is often overshadowed by the region's beaches, but it is well worth a few hours.

Its walled historic centre, shopping streets and numerous charming spots make Faro a highly recommended visit. Also take the opportunity to visit Estoi, a small town nearby with an interesting historical and architectural heritage.

Our recommendation for food

If you are looking for good value for money, we particularly like Restaurante Travessa, well known for its excellent set menu.

Vilamoura and Praia da Falésia: between marinas and cliffs

Vilamoura is home to the largest marina in the Algarve and offers a wide range of restaurants, shops and nautical activities.

Nearby is Praia da Falésia, one of the most impressive beaches in Portugal thanks to its long stretches of sand and the characteristic reddish cliffs that border it. It is a perfect place to walk, enjoy the beach or cycle along the coast.

Silves: history in the Algarve hinterland

The Algarve is not all about beaches. Silves is a magnificent example of this.

This historic town, crossed by a river and dominated by its impressive castle, retains a very special atmosphere. After strolling through its streets, a good option is to enjoy the local gastronomy in one of the restaurants near the market.

Alvor: one of our favourite places

Alvor combines beach, gastronomy, pedestrian routes and a great atmosphere all year round.

There are also numerous excursions to the sea caves and boats to Lagos. It is one of those places where we tend to overstay our welcome.

Lagos: caves, cliffs and the soul of the Western Algarve

Lagos is one of the Algarve's top destinations. Its historic old town, the wide range of water activities on offer and the excursions to caves and rock formations attract thousands of visitors every year.

If there's one place you can't miss on your itinerary it's Ponta da Piedade, possibly one of the most photographed landscapes in Portugal thanks to its golden cliffs, natural arches and crystal clear waters.

Our recommendation for food

We particularly like Tasca da Lota, where you can enjoy fresh fish and traditional Portuguese cuisine.

Cape St Vincent: the end of the world

Arriving at Cape St. Vincent always produces a special feeling.

Situated on the south-western tip of continental Europe, this enclave offers some of the most spectacular scenery on the Portuguese coastline. The wind, the vastness of the ocean and the impressive cliffs make for an unforgettable visit. In addition, temperatures are generally milder than in the rest of the Algarve, even during the summer.

The best sunset in Portugal is in Odeceixe

Our route ends at one of our favourite places in the whole country: Praia de Odeceixe.

The combination of river, beach and cliffs creates a unique landscape that reaches its maximum beauty at sunset. After many routes in Portugal, we still think that here you can enjoy one of the most spectacular sunsets in the country.

A perfect route to start from the Camper Park Playas de Luz.

The Algarve is one of those destinations that suits any type of traveller. You can look for paradisiacal beaches, historic villages, good gastronomy, nature or simply enjoy the pleasure of travelling leisurely in a motorhome.

If your route starts or ends in Huelva, Camper Park Playas de Luz will be happy to help you plan your trip and share with you our personal recommendations, many of them the result of years of travelling these roads.

Because some routes are forgotten over time... but a trip to the Algarve always makes you want to come back.
